As a member of the local Red Cross Chapter, I am pleased to announce the availability of the American Red Cross Hurricane App for use on both iPhone and Android platforms. This app is provided free to help people learn more about hurricanes and how to prepare for a hurricane.
By using this app, you can have hurricane alerts sent directly to your phone. As soon as an alert is given by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) the alert is delivered to your phone. This allows you prior notice of an approaching hurricane and giving you time to prepare.
The Prepare section, offers suggestions on what to do before a hurricane hits your area. This part of the app provides a checklist for you to make sure you have completed the necessary items such as; fill up your gas tank, bring in outside items like lawn chairs, secure windows and doors, and other related information.
In case you are caught in a hurricane, the “I’m Safe” feature allows you the ability to notify your friends and family via social media that you are safe. Since this provides a quick and easy way to update your social media sites, you could also use this in case of an emergency to notify people where you are located. Helping emergency responders to find you and bring you to safety.
Historical data on previous hurricanes is also provided. You look back up to 150 years to see how many hurricanes have hit your specific area and the path they took to reach your area.
We thank the American Red Cross for providing this app to help customers in and around the coastal regions of our country to remain safe during this hurricane season. Also, I challenge you take the Hurricane Test located on the app. Let me know how you scored.
